Wanted: Bride. Must love children. Mortals need not apply.

Carlos Panterra is looking for a mate, a woman who will love and care for the young orphans he’s recently taken under his wing (or paw, as the case may be). When the shape shifter spies the beautiful Caitlyn, it’s like sunshine amidst the darkness. At last, he’s found the perfect woman, except…

Caitlyn Whelan is mortal. Worse, her father is the head of a CIA agency bent on hunting the undead. Still, Caitlyn knows that Carlos is the man for her, shape shifter or not. So she jumps at the chance when her sister offers her a job to work with him, determined to show Carlos their attraction is more than just animal magnetism. But danger lurks in the night, and their unleashed, untamed passion might just get them both killed…

Goodreads Summary

Expecting nothing more than a rather awkward, if overdue reunion with her beloved sister Shanna, Caitlin Whelan walks into her nephew’s birthday party and is floored by the news that not only is her new brother-in-law a vampire, but the hunk on the basketball court she’s been drooling over is a were-panther.  Carlos is equally attracted to Caitlin, but there’s a problem: he’s only looking for a were-panther mate and as a human, she’s totally and completely off limits, no matter how hot and heavy he’s dying to get with her.

After hearing her father’s real intent is to get her to work with him at the CIA with his secret team eradicating vampires like Shanna’s husband, Caitlin knows she has to choose sides.  She decides to take a job with Mackay Security; her talent is being able to understand any language within minutes of hearing it.  She’ll need some self-defense training, and tag, Carlos is it.  Too bad all Carlos wants to do is get on a plane and head to Thailand to find his were-panther mate; instead he ends up tangled up, hot and sweaty and more involved than ever with Caitlin.  Then he gets the good/bad news that Caitlin is going on his trip with him as his interpreter.

Carlos is a wonderful hero: not content to just be tall, dark and yummy, he’s got a heart of gold when it comes to the were-kids he wants to protect at all costs.  He’s willing to give up his own future for them, as much as he wants Caitlin.  Caitlin is most of all stubborn, but she’s loyal to Carlos and really does want what’s best for him, she’s just sure that she’s it.  The two of them have great chemistry when Carlos gets around to giving in to her.

I was a little confused by who or what was going on in some parts of the story in Thailand; it slowed the story down a lot and frankly, some parts were just a little too goofy.  I think a couple of chapters could have been cut and the story would have been better for it.  When the action was allowed to move along naturally in the scenes in Thailand, it was suspenseful and well-paced and there was some delicious sexy time in there.

This is the 9th book in the Love at Stakes series, and while it’s not necessary to have read them all, a lot of the couples and characters from the earlier books appear here and it’s fun to see them again.  One of the hallmarks of the series is that all of the hot and heavy sex and romance are lightened up with some seriously funny moments and then there are some teary ones.  I enjoyed reading this one and will definitely pick up the next.
